Standard 1: Strategic Leadership
School executives will create conditions that result in strategically re-imagining the school vision. mission and goals in the 21st century. Understanding that schools ideally prepare students for an unseen but not altogether unpredictable future, the leader creates a climate of inquiry that challenges the school community to continually re-purpose itself by building on its core values and beliefs about its preferred future and then developing a pathway to reach it.
Element 1a. School Mission Vision and Strategic Goals:
The schools identity, in part, is derived from the vision, mission, values, beliefs and goals of the school, the processes used to establish these attributes and the ways they are embodied in the life of the school community.
The mission of Franklinton Elementary School is to strive to promote college-bound, career ready 21st Century Students. One of my goals this year was to create authentic learning experiences for our students. One of the ways in which I accomplished this was establishing a relationship with our local high school's Science department. Through the relationship I created opportunities for our elementary school students to interact with and learn from AP Biology and Chemistry students through hands on Science activities. This Science connection with the high school lead to an increased attendance at our STEMville Family Science Night and more engagement and interest in Science for our students. As part of our continued collaboration we are planning a Science Olympiad event for our 5th grade students.
Below are artifacts showing students participating in a science lab and the write up of the collaboration posted on our website by our district communications representative. These artifacts demonstrate that I have satisfied the requirements for this standard.

Element 1b. Leading Change:
The school executive articulates a vision and implementation strategies, for improvements and changes which result in improved achievement for all students.
The vision at Franklinton Elementary is Students today. Leaders tomorrow. As the 5th grade team administrator I worked to create an atmosphere where students could envision themselves as future leaders. There were two important components to changing the mindset of our students:
Tracking their data on graphs has inspired students to keep up with their progress and pushed them to work harder when they fall short of their goals. The contributions they made to improving their physical environment has sparked their creativity for future improvements.
Below are artifacts which include a letter to parents with data notebook information and community artwork created by students as well as 5th grade scholar quote wall. These artifacts show that I have met the requirements for this standard.

- The first was creating a physical environment which made students feel they were valued members of the school community.
- Second was creating a system which allowed students to take ownership of their own learning by having a growth mindset and setting goals for their future.

Element 1c. School Improvement Plan:
The school improvement plan provides the structure for the vision, values, goals and changes necessary for improved achievement for all students
Franklin County currently uses the Indistar platform to guide school improvement. Franklinton Elementary School's top three school improvement goals include raising Reading achievement from 39% to 50%, Math achievement from 50% to 75% and to increase parent and community engagement by 10%.
As part of the School Improvement plan to increase parent and community engagement by 10% I assisted the Principal in researching established PTA procedures and discovered some discrepancies in member conduct and general running of the PTA. I established that this was one of the main reasons for lack of parent participation. Since the resignation of certain members from the PTA committee more parents are beginning to express interest in joining the PTA. We will elect new officers at the next meeting.
Below are the school improvement goals for FES and minutes from out PTA board meeting, artifacts which demonstrate that I have satisfied the requirements for this standard.

Element 1d. Distributive Leadership:
The school executive creates and utilizes processes to distribute leadership and decision making throughout the school. Although FES is a PBIS school we were not implementing the basics of PBIS with fidelity. We had established a calendar of celebrations and had provided professional development for staff, but meetings were not being held regularly and we were skipping planned celebrations geared toward motivating our students. The Principal requested that I "reboot" the PBIS team. My first step was to offer all staff who were interested the opportunity to join the new "reboot" team. Eight new members signed on, we had our first meeting and we implemented some changes. To the left is the artifact of our first meeting and the duties I delegated to each team member, which shows I have satisfied the requirements for this standard. |
